    Press Play

I press play to turn on my consciousness everyday.

Ever since the first day there was always a beat,
    that beat hasn't stopped sounding.
This heart beat drifted in and out of other beats with different counts, measures and time
    signatures. After making friends with other rhythms, my beat came back to me transformed;
now engulfed in the hymns and hums of new found harmonies of the kick, the snare and the clap that brought Eric B and Rakim harmony.

If there had been enough money in my penny bank as a youngster I would have been Radio Raheem.

From the street curb to the lunchroom,
my internalized beat helped me craft memories of musical melodies.
My heart was synchronized with the Cutlas's gangsta rap, the Escort's Rhythm & Blues, the Astro's songs of old school soul, and the school bus's classical.
Everything else on the school bus was too explicit, the bus driver wouldn't let us hear it.

My heart became the container: the artist's record label, the microphone's booth, the lyric's page, the sound wave's speaker.

If only I had 7 times 10 to the 2nd in pennies I would have been Radio Raheem.

Without the ability to blast my music from the boombox i dreamed of holding in my hand, my hands became the heart-beat machine.

Lunchroom tables, bedroom walls, bedframes, refridgerators, and my teachers personal favorites the classroom desks became my drums.

I would play my drums until either I got blisters or got in trouble.
I got so many warnings that I was being insubordinate that I thought it was a term used for “bad” musicans – and man was I a bad musican.
I was so bad that I had crowds of people gathered intently to hear my internalized music.
Some people even improvised rhyming phrases over my heart - beat.

This beat crafted from the streets of have nots always healed when I was out of harmony.

I was never encouraged to play the drums when I was younger.
I never played an instrument when I was younger.
Now that I can make my own, grown up, decisions I have no time to learn how to play an instrument.

So everyday when i press play on my radio i am reverted me back to memories that granted me musical conciousness.
    Young Revolutionary.
