A producer oversees the recording process to get the best performance/sound our of a recording. They don't have to have all kinds of people under them.

I consider myself as a producer/M.C.___ my opinion of a producer is a person who can make beat's, mix & master music, & do engineering. anyone can make a beat but only a producer knows the deal when it comes to quality sound like the EQ level's & frequency

Not based on opinion...there is a definition of what a producer is.

i'm a producer but i'm not an engineer. ok, so i can mix a song, i have mastered the vocals for my crew's mixtape (the instrumental was a young jeezy beat.) and i've done other recordin' work in our house studio (before they started goin' to a "professional" recordin' studio). i see producer and director (films) sorta in the same light, they both have a "vision" for how they want the song to come together/the film to come together (makin' sure that the vocalists/actors performance is suberb, ect.).
anyways, i can consider myself a producer and beatmaker. i'd rather hire a engineer but i can "get down" and master the track myself (except for eqin', that's needs work. but i changed the levels and i heard no difference so maybe the eq needed to be "encoded" while i thought it could be done in real-time and hence why i heard no difference in the song.) Found this as a definition and it explains pretty nicely:
The term "Producer" is used in many different ways these days and there isn't an exact definition any more.
Traditionally, the Producer for music/recording work had a role similar to the director of a movie. The Producer is the one whose job it was to assist the band or artist with creative decisions and help them to create the best possible product. He may suggest different arrangements for songs, or entirely new parts. He will be coaching the musicians to help them deliver a great performance, as well as helping to resolve artistic disputes between band members. If he was hired by a record label, he usually is given the power of the final say on most matters in the recording studio. If he was hired by the band or artist, then the band or artist usually retains the power to override the producer if they don't agree since they are the ones that hired him (but, if they hired him, they usually did so because they respect that person's work and opinions and want his input to make a better record).
Also, in the traditional sense, the Producer is NOT the person doing the actually recording and operating the equipment. That is what the Recording Engineer does.
In modern times, though, the term "Producer" has been diluted and lost a lot of its original meaning. Now days a "producer" may simply be the person who created the beats for a rap or hip-hop group. They call themselves "Producer" because they are producing beats... but, that isn't a real producer in the traditional sense.
Also, these days, the Producer and Recording Engineer are sometimes the same person. One person will be both producing and operating all the equipment at the same time.
In addition, many producers are talented enough that they will often contribute musical parts (guitars, keyboards, etc.) to a project if for some reason the regular band members can't perform the parts well enough on their own, or simply if the producer comes up with a great idea for a part.
In regards to your particular question, a "Record Producer" and an "Independent Producer" can be the same exact thing, assuming we are only talking about the music business. "Independent" simply means that the producer is an independent contractor for hire that either record labels or bands/artists can hire to produce their recording project. In fact, these days, pretty much all the big time producers are independent in that they don't work for any one company exclusively, although many of the big name producers also have their own record companies and may have a distribution deal with a major label.
So, really, I think your question would have been better worded as to what the difference between a "staff producer" and "independent producer" is. The only difference there is that a "staff producer" would be someone that was on staff with some sort or record company and produced exclusively for them... which is kind of rare these days.
"Record Producer" simply means someone who produces records, as opposed to a film producer or game producer. A "record producer" could be either independent or on staff with a company.

If that's the case
I = Producer
I don't have underlings and what not, but I'm out there pushing my artists all day. In the summer, I'll bump their music just so people hear it. And honestly, it's gotten a lot of potential buzz going. You can believe that or not. Not only that, it shows that you actually enjoy what you're doing, and not just doing it for the money. Because you, yourself, are listening to your own product.
What would a spokesman for Pepsi look like if they were out drinking a Coke?

what if you call yourself a baby producer or an up-and-coming producer? lol
I think being called a producer sounds much better than beatmaker. But, I still prefer to work alone- more mulah for me! I fully produce for only one artist and that was official as of yesterday, lol! I am a songwriter, rapper, and singer and I do make my own songs from time to time, but I spend the majority of my time producing.
What would I be called?
