What does producing mean to you?

This should be a good topic for all producers. I want to know how many of you are doing this just as a hobbie or if you are taking this so serious that it is a career plan for you. For me, itz my life...so im going to try to go to school for it and make it a career like i said. Tell me what it is to you? Career or Hobbie?

well at first i started it cuz i have good feel for rythme (not 4 dancing tho :D) and after a while a friend asked me if he could rap on some beats so i started making some beats , in a while i'm going to contact somle recored labels and send them some demos
so it's a hobbie but i'm tryin to make a career out of it :D

Its a hobbie. Its somethin i like doin. I rap - make beats - play in a band and produce a few different rappers and singers.


in my free time. BECAUSE i started off as a rapper usin commercial beats when i was like 17. Then got into findin and usin original beats from the net. But you can only get so far before people want you to pay for beats. Why the hell do i wanna pay you $50 for a beat when i'm just gonna make a song, and give it to friends and local dj's to play.

I like givin oppurtunity to people that dont have it, and are in the same position that i was in when i was rappin. Shit, if i meet somebody local, or close enough to me. I invite them to come record at our booth. And produce their music for them, showin them a few tricks along the way.

It's a hobby that I wouldn't mind turning into a career.

I didn't actually start producing until this year. I'm in school to be a computer scientist/ computer engineer. No way I'd drop 2 years of college to change now. If the opportunity came along to where I could SERIOUSLY. And I mean SERIOUSLY. Like signing with a decent label or something, then I'd do it. But there are waaaayy to many producers out there. Chance of you gettin' picked up is slim. That's why I'ma keep doing this computer engineering thing as my main career, so I can keep a cash flow going while I'm doing beats.

I'll be damned if I'm gonna be this broke motherfucker grinding to make it in the business when I'm 2-3 years away from getting a College Degree in Computers coming out making like $50,000 a year. No thanks!

So yeah, it's a serious hobby for me. If I go for like 3-4 days without at least fucking with music, I start to get irritable. But at the same time, I know making it big in production is a pipe-dream, so I'm keeping my sights on what I originally wanted to do just in case music don't work for me.

I'm a business major...and I really can't fuckin' stand business. I can't see myself in a nine to five listening to some asshole boss who is so out of touch with reality, but still think they know what they're talking about. I would love to do music as a career, and I'm trying to make some moves here at home.

Producing isn't actually the only thing I got my hand in. Before I even touched Fruity Loops I was acting in plays around Detroit...just community theatre...and I actually was a theatre major for two semesters but the classes were spread out too far apart, so I decided to go the business route.

I'm starting to feel myself as a producer though, although I know I still have some work to do. I guess I'm kind of hoping to get the same deal as Kanye, put out some decent shit around my hometown, and then get hooked up with someone like No I.D. to show me the little tricks.

There is a studio near by where I live too that has night classes on mixing and mastering, I plan on taking some of those classes once I graduate as well.

there are a lot of tech colleges that teach pro tools engineering and shit like that...and then have job placement programs. thats what i might do

those of you that are looking to turn this into a career should keep in mind that jobs are scarse, and the competition for positions is overwhelming... also, in the states most audio engineering jobs are in New York, LA, Chicago.... and a few other major cities. Im told, however, there are some jobs in small college towns in radio. But for the most part its a tough industry all around.

If this is your passion you should DEFINATELY continue.... dont let anyone hold you back... keep after your dream and you will reach it

It's A job and a career for me. I already got a degree in the audio engineering field but i am back in college to obtain my bachelors.

where did you get your engineering degree? i hear that Full Sail in Florida is a good school. there are none here in STL and im not sure if i wanna move.... ive researched online and there are a lot more over seas than in US...

although when it comes down to it... it all comes down to what your mix sounds like

Well for me it's just a hobby...There was a time when I tried to pursue a career, but since musically I'm a non-conformist I got a lot of people that didnt return phone calls or e mails I guess I'm considered wack because I don't sound like everyone else.

I don't set goals so I do what I love to do at the moment and those are Producing, Dancing and personal development so thats what I do, where it takes me...who know.....
