Default Request: Somebody teach me how to sample songs?!!

Hey everybody, I've been messing around with acid and flstudio for the past couple years but one technique I could never get down was sampling. How do I sample songs like Kanye does? Is there more to it than just snipping out a section in acid and then loading it in FL STUDIO?

If anybody could post a tutoirals I would be really appreciate it.

    Thanks!

sounds good i'll try it, but do professional producers apply filters to their samples or anything like that?

Depends man. You apply filters to your samples based on your situation. If you just want the bassline out of a sample, you're going to want to use a Low Pass filter. If you want to take the bass out so you can replay the bassline, you're gonna want to use a High Pass filter or a Notch.

Also, if your samples have drums on them, you're going to want to EQ those out. Your beat will sound weird with your drums playing and then the sample's drums playing in the background.

And to your first question, sampling can be what you want it to be. Just chopping a section out of a song and loading it into your program is called "looping". Cause that's all the shit is gonna do is keep going over and over. You can throw some drums on it and have a beat I guess. But most people consider this a real lazy way of making a sampled beat and alot of times won't get you alot of respect. IMHO, if you're gonna sample, you should chop up your samples MPC-like. You can either manually chop them in a separate program like Cool Edit or Adobe Audition, or you can drop a portion of a song into FL Slicer and have FL do it for you.

ahh agent orange your getting at what I want to know, how do I EQ out the drums and apply "low pass filters" I'm really rusty with Audition and I would probably have to download it again, but that's what I wanted to know. obviously producer's filter out these unwanted instruments but I thought that they somehow obtained acapella versions. If you could help me this it would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming that we're talking about old '60s Soul songs and whatnot right?

No. Unless you have a DIY acapella, there is no way to obtain an acapella of these old songs. I mean, there are exceptions, but releasing public acappellas and instrumentals is a recent phenomenon, so you're pretty much SOL when it comes to old soul songs, or any old song for that matter.

I can't TEACH you how to sample, but I can give you some tips:

    1) Try to find a part in the song that has the least amount of drums or no drums at all. Normally this will occur around the intro or outro. But can occur anywhere in the song. It just depends.

    2) In the event that the whole song contains drums and you still want to sample it, then you will have to do some EQ & Filtering work. In this case, I hope you know a little about frequencies and where kickdrums, snares, toms, hi-hats, and other drums and percussion instruments generally fall. Alot of beginners think that you can completely EQ drums out of a sample. This is FALSE. When we say EQ out the drums, what we actually mean is lower the main frequencies of the drums so that they will be less noticeable and the drums that YOU use have more of a chance of covering them up.

    3) If you want some vocals out of a track (once again, you should know around what frequencies the vocals are most prominent at), you should probably apply a Band Pass Filter around the frequencies where the vocals are most dominant. This way you reduce any low frequency instruments like bass and kick drums, and high frequency instruments like hi-hats and the actual instrumental part of the song.

Honestly, I would have to type up an essay to help you out. Sampling is so much more than just cut, drag, and drop. I don't know exactly how much you know about EQ and Filters, but you should really read up on them before you just start turning knobs. If you don't know the 3 main types of filters and how to apply them and don't have a general understanding of frequencies (at least drums and vocals) DO NOT TRY TO SAMPLE. You'll be wasting your time. The more you know, the more you'll be able to figure out for yourself without referring back here for tips. And you'll be able to teach others with confidence. :thumbup1:

alright thanks, I have messed around in audition in the past in attempts making DIY acapellas. I'm guessing I would just isolate a snare drum hit and then apply a noise reduction filter?
