it depends............like on the producer and what type of beat you are trying to create.....for example if you are going for something that sounds slow, sad.....go with minor chords like a minor 7th, or some type of minor chord progression....

To attempt an answer to your question though, it's probably accurate to say that modern R&B has a lot of it's roots in Jazz music. Hence the use of a lot of 7th chords. A 7th chord can be either Major or Minor and essentially adds a note to the original triad C,E and G in a C Major chord for example)and gives it an extra 'flavour'.

You'll probably find that 9th's are also quite useful in R&B also- so for example a major 9th in the key of C could include the notes C, E, G, B and D or a selcetion of these including the root (C) and the 9th (D). You'll probably find that moving around the chord positions 1,4 and 5 in the major (1 being the C Major 9th chord) and Minor 9th chords in chord position 2 and 6 (D and A for the key of C) will give good results. A minor 9th in the 2nd chord position would be D, F, A, C and E for example.

Start with an A minor, and try moving up to a 5th or 7th, and maybe down to a 6th, I like to work with C major and A minor though.
