Default Producer's block... - 17-08-2008, 07:27 PM

Everything sounds like shit, you can't make beats, you just can't find "that sound". How do you deal with it?

what I usually do is go through the plug ins i rarely use and go through every sound. Ill jus sit in front of the keyboard and play it until i hear that note.it works for me all the time.

Listen to a wide variety of music from other genres and just broaden your view of rhythms, melodies, instruments, and arrangements. its amazing how listening to music your normally wouldn’t listen to can inspire ideals.

I think the main problem I have lately is I can't find "that sound" I'm looking for. It's crazy, like I'll hear something in my head, but can't bring it to fruition.

I have that problem all the time. Most of the time its just the instruments. I like to go after different sounds and these presets that come with the plugins don't do it for me any more im to picky. Most of the time ill have a nice drum beat or melody and save it if its worth keeping. I trash more stuff than i make tho lol.

Sometimes it helps to listen to alot of different music like mentioned above and listen to producers that make real simple beats. Sometimes its easy to try to hard and end up just not being satisfied what w/e you make.

Every once and a while ill end up usin the mouse or keyboard and throw random melody's together and just erase it if it sounds crazy. By the time i have 1 or 2 melody's i could have a direction on what i want the song to sound like and build from there. If im just straight dead with no ideas I just go through some older beats or some incomplete beats and go through plugins and mix the beats instead of composing so Ill still be doing something productive either way.

True, true. I have a folder in FL Studio full of beats I've never finished, or that were the rough draft to some of my completed beats. Thanks everyone, and if there's anything else, keep it coming!

Collab is another option cause sometimes others can help you find that sound or hear an alternative that may be missing like the neptunes always mix styles and elements on tracks.

Have a break.
Best thing to do.

Don't load up any sequencer, don't touch your keyboard.
Don't make music for a week or 2.

That always helps me, and I come back fresh and full of ideas.

But the best advice I can give is:

Don't force anything.

I actually had this problem, I was throwin' stuff, not finishing it… I was leaving my stuff for like 2 weeks, I realized that is exactly what you should not do, Lol
I force myself to find solutions, even if it's not gonna be jay-z' s next track, I progress, because I understand my mistakes. I'm far to be what or where I would like to be, it's just time, patience and a lot of work. Trust in yourself and that sound will come alone, peace.

It sounds stupid but when i get into a block i usually get on the bus to the transportation center. Get off, and just sit down and and watch whats goin on. Think about life, your goals. I like to look at all the crack feinds and the people fightin, arguin. sit back and relax, laugh a little, and think a little while sippin some VSOP.lol

It works every time.
