Default New to beat making program tips. - 12-05-2007, 12:08 AM

Hi guys, whatsup!

Throughout my career I've remixed a lot. I've really gave up on remixing now since it's really played out. So, I decided to start producing actually my own music, rather than using rap/rnb beats on my acapellas. Well, I want to start producing and i have the following programs: Cubase, Fruity Loops 7 XXL, and Reason 3.0. Out of all of them, I think fruity loops seems really easy. Therefore, I want to start using fruity loops first to get a hang of the production scene. Can someone help me out by giving me some tips on how to produce? .. I know many of you on this website are really experienced with programs such as fruity loops etc. Does anyone have a link to "Fruity Loops Tutorials, Kits, Sound Packs" etc. ? Can someone make me a layout on how to use fruity loops, and how to make beats? Thanks a lot, i'd really appreciate it!

I hope what I'm about to say won't discourage you from striving to be a producer.......

There is no tip in this world that's gonna tell you how to produce. Especially startin out man. To me, music production is the epitome of creativity. Your beats can be WHATEVER you want them to be. Your beats can have WHATEVER sounds you want in them. Now if you need tips, we can probably help you on how to make your beats sound better, more clearer, tell you how to do a snare roll, or whatever. But nobody can tell you HOW to produce or HOW to make your beat. That is solely up to the producer.

But my best advice to you is crawl before you walk man. I know you said you did remixes but do you have any type of musical experience? Do you know what chords, scales, bars, notes, and beats are? Do you know the keys on a keyboard well? Do you know what a synthesizer is and the difference between additive and subtractive synthesis? Do you know the main types of filters and how they work? What about EQ?

Basically man, it's just gonna take time. I had to find that out the hard way. I just jumped into FL thinkin I was just gonna knock out hot tracks. But I quickly found out that wasn't happenin. There's more to this producing thing than meets the eye. Read everything you can man. Learn about sound engineering. Learn music terminology. In the beginning, you'll probably be really frustrated. To be good at this, it takes ALOT of time and practice just like anything else.

As far as a tutorial or something, I think I posted the FL Studio Bible a little while back. It may still be in there somewhere. Just try searching. If it's not working, I might still have a copy of it on my computer that I could re-up.

Yea man and look at other peoples threads what people are replying. If you dont like something in their beat and people are sayin they dont like w/e it is you will know better not to do that. I would stay in these forums. Like AO i dived right into fruityloops and I didnt know shit about beats and forums so I learned most of it took me a LONNNGGG ass time. These boards help alot.

For drum patterns maybe start off tryin to make stuff thats commonly heard. I say that because most people put kicks claps and snares all over the place. If it doesn't sound right then don't keep it most likely if you don't like what you created nobody else will at least when your first startin out.

Take advantage of youtube maybe find a site thats only about hiphop beats. Dont be scared to mess with the knobs. When I started out I would just throw a synth or a reverb etc in the beat and not bother moving knobs to see what they do. Most of these beat programs have the same stuff if you learn in fruityloops then reason wont be that big of a challenge for you. Dont be afraid to ask questions. How to make a beat

^^^

I just remembered about that site. Yeah OcPz, if you want some good tutorials for beginners, go to www.warbeats.com

I owe damn near 60-70% of what I know from their video tutorials. Had I gone there first instead of diving headfirst into FL, shit would have made alot more sense and I could probably be even better now. I'd say get acquainted with FL first. Just start fucking with stuff. Hit every button just to see what it does to your sound. Once you are semi-comfortable, go to that site, create an account, and watch EVERY video tutorial they have. And I seriously mean WATCH, like study that shit. Even the basics. Don't skip over the melodies and chords and scales tutorials because they seem basic. I'm tellin' you now, those are the most valuable.

Also, this might be too advanced for you at this point, but EQ is a mighty weapon. Later on down the road, learn how to use that shit. Alot of cats that's been doing this for a while still haven't grasped that concept yet.

Not to sound like an asshole but you wont get nowhere by asking for a opinion like that. It doesn't matter really they all have features others don't have. The best is what you make it and how you will learn to understand the program. As long as I been doin beats I see that most of them work the exact same way its just stuff looks different.

Most people here use Fruity loops 7 and Reason 3. I would go with one of those because help is easier to find. I use Cubase SX 3, Reason 3.0.4, Project 5v2, Sonar 6 PE. They all have something that the other doesn't have. I use a lil bit of everything tho w/e I get my hands on lol.

I think a lot of people use fruityloops, but I use acid for the most. I would say start collecting programs and try them and see which you like the best.

Ive used fruity loops but now i use only reason..Fruity loops is a coo program but i think it has to many synths alone..and alota of the sounds are generic so gotta load up on some plug ins and drum samples..but reason is a lil more complicated than fl..so if i were you i would try fl to start with but once you know what does what with any program you can try others..good luck homie
