I think they do one of three things: mute it, bleep it with a signal, or reverse it so you can't tell what they saying.

Yes when I record peoples vocals and they need it edited I usually just make a volume going threw all the vocal tracks and just turn the volume all the way down or silence it depending on the app used. If you decide to do that make sure the artist or who ever isn't swearin like somebody robbed him and shot his mom because it wont sound good with alot of silent pauses. Reverse usually sounds better imo. Its good to use sound effects to but dont get out of hand with them.

I know this hella old, but tha pro's do beep em out, they mostly reverse or replace them, but some shit be bleeped witta girl moan, gun cock, etc.
