How much money is in makin beats?

ok, i know you gotta spend some money before you start makin money but for you producers who are sellin beats regularly, how much money is in it? whats the average starting price on beat? id like to do it on the side for that lil bit extra cash, i aint jumping into it expecting to produce top of the range beats or anything, it'll take a long time to learn without a doubt.

n im sure your sick of answering this question, but where do i start, i have FL8 atm with no external hardware, got any suggestions on what software i should be using?

there is definitely money to be made in beat making but u wanna develope that talent into producing and even ghost writing if u can...behind the scenes is where all the money is made real talk. first thing u wanna do as a beat maker or producer is get some publishing get copyrights and do it officially. after the legalalities is out the way u can get u an ascap or start leasing ur beats for quick cash thas like clockwork. its like nickel and diming doin it that way but the money rolls in if u got good product. but once u get ur legal shit out the way u can start selling exclusive rights for ur beats which is like the whole lump sum at once for ur music. ull learn how to price ur shit accordingly by how much time u spend on the beat how much is involved with the beat so on and so forth. as far as ur equipment goes if u got the latest version of fl studio dat should be all u need u can download some plugins from cp and some sample kits and u should be on ur way u might wanna get a midi controller tho lol so u dont have to click and drag its easier when its right at ur fingertips

i found what you said really useful goodfella, but is there any way you can expand on the legalities? like an idiot's guide or something, cus i know there's a lotta people out there who wanna get there business in order..

If music is a hobby, then u shouldn't be expectin any money from it.
On the other hand, if you're serious about it, then you can expand and develop.
First, if you're serious, you should be looking at getting a manager/agent who can then sort out your ASCAP/BMI stuff, and build relationships with artists etc.

basically u wanna make u and everything and everybody affilitated with you official get ur name, and ur company copyrighted first and foremost i think it cost less than 200 a piece to get that done last time i checked then u can copyright ur music as you go along u can do the poorman's copyright (which probly wont hold up in court) or u can do officially with the legal copyright forms u can find them at the library i think that costs less than 50 then u can get ur ascap thas free just go to www.ascap.com and read up on it.

I started off selling $30 exclusives, built up some customers over the years
now I'm selling exclusives as packages so I make lump sums of around $100 --> $250 depending on the beats i'm selling because i'm still selling my oldest beats for $30 exclusively to keep the money coming in

If you willing to sell for cheap then you can make some gas money, but depending on how good you are and the way you market yourself you can prolly make more its just like any business so you gotta treat it like that.

i been thinkin about sellin my beats, but make em as a hobby so it aint a priority. supposedly myspace gonna let you sell beats on there soon so i might use that if anyone wants to buy them.
