Default How 2 Make Money selling Beats - 12-09-2008, 11:21 PM

This msg is from inside of the mastermind himself (JHill) who is currently living life with an audio production career down in Texas. You won't find this info in any audio production colleges:

I can almost type a book up about this stuff, but i'm not going to bore you with the gritty details. You know, there is a lot of DO's & DON'Ts about selling beats. If this is something you want to do for a living then listen up.

First, save your money and go register your name in the music BIZ, build you a website, design a logo, & get your TAX I.D first!!!

That will run you about 2-3 thousand dollars. Please guys listen up, cuz all this stuff is a must, at least to save your ass in the near future with legal terms.

Second, learn the music industry and which genre you are going to take in. So many beat composers try and step foot into the game face first and get dropped immediately bcuz they dont understand the history of the genre they are pursuing and where its going.

Reason I put it like that is bcuz, the hiphop industry is fixing to take a huge turn. There will be 2 types of hiphop IMO. Deep lyric Nas type shit and there will be a pop/rock/hiphop genre. You will need to decide which side you are going with and specialize in it.

Third, when pursuing an artist for a beat purchase. Listen to a few of their songs b4 you approach them. This is very important! Get a good feel for them first, b4 you have a listening party for your beats. Build your beat around them. This will allow you to bring product they want and will allow you to up your price in the end.

This is something we do all the time. When we are being pursued from a major artist, we will listen to their whole album first b4 we go anywhere. Then we will make about 25-30 beats just off what we heard. Contact the artist management and arrange a listening party with the artist and producer for listening purposes. Artist love this shit, bcuz you and the artist can really get a good vibe for each other, then money will be no option!! << >>

Fourth, one word, PROMOTION! I can not stress this enough. So many beat composers/ producers/ artist, do not promote their self enough. You have to attend music conventions, artist parties, promotion events etcetc just like the artist or your beats/name will not get heard. Get out to these events and your name will start to catch a buzz.

My first convention I went to, people came to me asking me what I had to offer like I was a car salesman lol....it was crazy! Once they heard the heat me and henry had, people really started calling and requesting stuff....Now the name Diversified Beats, is really stirring up a buzz especially in Texas. Our main mission at the moment is to be international. But hey, isnt that everyones.....

Fifth and Foremost, live for your music. Eat, breath and shit your sound. If you dont believe in your own self, you wont sale shit. If you go to an artist listening party and you are sitting there playing your beats begging for a reaction from the artist your beat probally wont sale. You have to really bob your head, or stand up and move. Make that artist feel you really think this beat/beats is the shit!

When playing a beat for the artist, most times he will ask you, what were you thinking when you made this beat. This is where you step in and say something like, (for example: a slow piano beat, you were thinking about a broad and love making) The artist will bleed off that and write a song about it. This is the step that seperates you from a beat composer to a producer....

Remember guys, this is something people do for the passion and love for hiphop. People write these songs to express theirselves. We write the scales and melodies to express ourselves. Man up & take charge of your money and life, if your serious about music production. Spend the extra money for the hardware, its worth it...
Live life! Love life!
