This is a beat I did in reason. I just bypass all the effects and solo and export all my instruments individually then load em up in sonar. You could manually remove the silence on the tracks but in sonar 6 they have a tool for removing silence. I just put this picture up because alot of people get mixing and mastering confused. I dont understand how some of you use alot of vst synths and still mix and master in FL w/o your cpu going crazy from various mastering plugins on every track.

Im not really sure what you mean by drum mastering because mastering would be the whole beat. Doing the drums alone then putting your synths on will just mess up your mix later on.Right now im studying books on mastering. For drums theres not really a whole lot of work on hip hop and r&b tracks theres not alot of panning and different velocity's for drums vs a rock song. After you do the mixing far as panning and velocity. Make sure all your drums are on separate tracks. Messing with the frequency's with the EQ for drums is the most work far as that goes.

I use 2 export my shit out of FL and mix in Cubase, but I just use Cubase for everythin now.
And the 2 main things I use in drums are Compressors and EQ.

U can't learn Mastering in a month, or even a couple.
Like ABM is doin, get ya self some books on it, read n practice.
It will make a HUGE difference to ur sound, and u won't sound like the other 1000000 producers on soundclick with their shit all sloppy n wack.

Any of you guys got good tutorials on mixing and mastering. My problem is I get peaking audio levels, and to fix it, the bass sounds end up being too quiet.

I'm using acid or Cool Edit pro, but if you have good tutorials for other programs (like cubase or whatever) I can get a copy of those. I just need to learn this shit and make that beat BANG.

Thanks Elimn8. I'm going to check those out.

By the way has anyone noticed that a lot of songs peak out (go in the red)? Not by a lot but many seem to at least a little

Alot of songs do that before I even knew what a eq was I would pay attention to shit like the bass going no higher then the yellow zone, the kicks staying up in the orangish red area on my stereo I kinda had a idea but I think they purposly do that in hip hop mainly cuz everyone want that bass you could feel. Theres a -3DB and a +3DB rule its something like when your mixing nothing goes over 0DB and to be on the safe side keep it -3DB then when everything is mixed make it +3DB to give it that extra loudness back. I think its to keep you away from distortion.

Yeah in all these hip hop songs, open them up in Cool Edit and just hit play. You'll see that shit peaking.

kool..what I mean by drum mastering is when you master the drums..lol simple as that. What do you do to the kicks, snare etc..when you sit down and begin to mixdown the beat.

ABM summed it up pretty well

but by the way DC Entel, just so you know, you can't really master drums... well you can but it's pointless... mastering is what you do on a finished track, like, adding effect to a full/finished track... what you were talking about was mixing drums... you already knew that last part, but you just got the word wrong ;) that's why people said there's no point in mastering drums... just thought I'd let you know!
