Default artist charged me for him to make a song to my beat?

ok i was on twitter and this artist (hes not a major yet, he has songs with many majors and a track produced by KE, hes know)so he was asking producers to send beats to him and i decided to try it and send him a beat, he replied to me and said the beat was hot, and told me that he will make a song, promote it and all of that if i pay him $300, but isnt a artist supposed to pay the producer??? so u gonna tell me he charged KE to make a song to his beat??? this just got me confused. what do u guys think?

Most people think rappers have to pay producers to get beats, but it all depends... If he's working on an album/mixtape, then he should be paying you to use your beats. If you're working on an album and want to produce all the tracks, but get various rappers/singers for the verses/hooks, then you'd need to pay the rappers/singers.

But if it's just a random promo track, usually, the producer is in the "position of power". If you think it would be great for you to get a track with that rapper, then you might consider paying him to rap on your beat, but if not, don't waste your money. If he wants to use your work, he should pay you. Or if you both want to work with each other, then you should both do it for free, just for the "love of music".

Good answer Mart85, but I think it's all bullsh*t to be honest...sounds like a game. Why in the hell would I pay any rapper or singer to perform on a track I produce if I'm not making an album. I wouldn't care if it was the hottest rapper or singer out at the moment I still wouldn't pay them to sing or rap on my track...unless I had an album deal and in that case I would be in the position to pay.

Yeah, well if we're talking about big rappers, I would pay to get them to rap on my beats... I'm talking about Eminem or Jay-Z... and that's pretty much it to be honest. Or maybe Drake, T.I, Kanye West, Lil Wayne etc... I mean, if you get one of those rappers to rap on your beats, you'll be heard by basically millions of people. So that's a good reason to pay.

But yeah, otherwise there's no reasons... There are plenty of great rappers that you can collaborate with, you don't need to pay to get an average rapper to rap on your beats.

yeah i agree if he was a lil wayne type raper then shit i would no questions asked... but he isnt and like u said if i wanted him to get on my track i would have to pay but he was the one asking producers to send beats to him so i thought i should give it a chance..so i guess he was expecting ppl that dont know anything about the game to send beats and then make a song and get money out of the producer. in that case since he wanted beat he should be the one paying, not me

Do you have an ASCAP membership? There's a chance he could be charging you to get on its because if it hits the radio or sold on an album/mixtape you could earn it back in royalties, hence why you would typically have to pay to get a more well known rapper on one of your tracks.

But take that with a grain of salt I'm fairly new to the business, that's just what seems most logical to me. But unless you've heard his previous work and know he's not all talk, I would hold back.
