Default Gaza may turn into huge prison

    10/31/2005 6:00:00 PM GMT

Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa warned on Monday that the Gaza Strip could turn into a huge prison camp if there was no solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Reuters news agency reported.

Kidwa’s warning came as the region was hit by the worst wave of violence since Israel withdrew from the occupied Gaza Strip last month.

“Unless a range of problems in the Gaza Strip is resolved, it will turn into a huge prison camp,” Kidwa, speaking through an interpreter, told a press conference during a visit to South Korea.

Israel’s pullout from Gaza was “a positive step” but it must be followed by actions to hand over real control, Kidwa told the conference after talks with South Korean officials.

“There has been no change in the legal status of the Gaza Strip,” he said, adding that Israel continued to control water resources and passage rights throughout the region.

    * Israel kills 3 Islamic Jihad fighters

Israeli occupation forces killed three Islamic Jihad fighters in military operations near the West Bank city of Jenin, BBC reported.

The shootings took place in the town of Qabatiya late on Sunday and overnight on Monday, hours after the Islamic Jihad resistance group said it would halt rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip if Israel did the same.

A top Islamic Jihad leader, Khaled al-Batsh, was quoted by the BBC as saying that the group would cease firing if Israel stopped “its aggression”.

Last week, Israel launched a huge offensive against the Islamic Jihad after it claimed responsibility for a bomb blast that killed five Israelis in the northern town of Hadera.

The resistance group said it carried out the Hadera attack to avenge the Israeli army's killing of Luay Saadi, one its senior leaders in the occupied West Bank.

A week of violence has now left more than 12 Palestinian dead.

    * W. Bank unilateral withdrawal

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said that Israel should withdraw from the West Bank unilaterally, because peace talks with the Palestinians are bound to fail, Bloomberg reported.

Barak said that the Jewish state should leave as much as 93 percent of the territory for an independent Palestinian state.

He said that the pullout would take up to three years and follow the completion of the West Bank separation barrier.

According to Barak’s proposal, up to 70,000 Israelis who live in small settlements on the eastern side of the West Bank would be evacuated.

About 22,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank along with 2.4 million Palestinians.

“We should take destiny in our hands and realize that, for the time being, we don't have partners,” Barak said. “Let's act unilaterally.''

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says that he will not carry out more unilateral withdrawals after the implementation of the Gaza pullout plan.

“Whoever thought that by just pulling out of Gaza we would bring an end to our struggle with Palestinian terror was just deluding himself,'' said Barak, who was defeated by Sharon in his 2001 bid for re- election after less than two years in office.

Israel must get used to the fact that it is surrounded by “hostile countries” such as Syria and Iran and may never live in peace with its neighbors, Barak said.

“We have to adapt to it, to live with it, while leaving the door wide open to the resumption of negotiations,'' he said.

Deputy head of Tel Aviv University's Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, Ephraim Kam, said that Barak’s remarks reflect “a feeling among many Israeli decision makers that there is little chance now to reach a comprehensive agreement with the Palestinians.'
