Default [6-19-06] Topic Of The Day: Punk Or Rock?

What do you perfer punk music or rock music. I understand there is a difference in style and music with those two genres.

I have learned and i can be wrong if i am please correct me but i have learned that neither one of these groups except pop music ie backstreet boyz and jessica simpson.

But True Rock Stars such as Ozzy Osbourn groups of that nature do not consider groups like Limp Biscut or bands like Ashlee Simpsons true Rock Music.

I have gotten boerd with hip-hop numbers of times and began listening to system of the down, blink 182 i fuckin love travis i also listened to gwen stefani and green day but my white boy friends told me that was punk music and not tru Rock. I i guess i get into punk, but now some of tha shit i listen to they are telling me its pop. I like Asyle Parker Angles new song they say thats pop now? i dont get it. But i never was a fan of all that grundge music tha mosh pits and just shit i can't understand all tha screamin and yellin..but i get into a lil areosmith. What are your takes on rock and punk music im intrested..post some links if you have any

I'm glad you brought this topic to light. I don't have alot of time right now so I'm gonna keep it short. I'll probably post again later.

Everyone's favorite "Rap" group, Run-DMC, was not a "Rap" group. They were a rock group. Hip-Hop's roots started in Rock music. I am not ashamed to say I listen to a SHITLOAD of rock music. Thrice, He Is Legend, Fall Out Boy, As I Lay Dying, Norma Jean, Agony Scene, System of a Down, and Nickelback just to name a few.

As far as the differentiation between punk and rock, I'm not too sure. I just listen to it all.

It is known to most people hear that I listen to music of rock orientation (correct word???)... I don't really know how to differ between rock and punk music because people's classifications of what's rock and what's not are different depending on what they mostly listen to.... I would classify Sex Pistols, NOFX, The Ramones, The Misfits and The Clash as punk, they are just a few that I'd say are punk...

rock is really harder to distinguish because there are so many forms of rock music as rock isn't just a genre in it's own I would say, you've got the 50's and 60's Rock 'n' Roll music, 70's and 80's Punk Rock, Hard Rock (heavy metal), Glam Rock (glam or hair metal), the 90's Grunge, Brit Pop, Indie Rock, then in the mid 90's, 95 pop punk came along, then the 2000's/late 90's Nu-Metal came along...

Ashlee Simpson, Gwen Stefani e.t.c I wouldn't classify them as true rock as they are mainly influenced by pop music...

My playlist is a weird playlist lol as in the fact it has 'loud/shouting/screaming' bands such as Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, Killswitch Engage, Trivium just to name a few, there's also 'softer' (not really the correct word, but it describes what I'm saying) bands like Sum 41, Simple Plan, Blink 182, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, The Used, System of a Down then there's a couple of 'pop/popish' (is that even a word? lol) artists like Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarkson...

it's a weird variation of artists as I said lol...

people have there own categorisation of music genres so it's really up to the person themselves as what genres they would place artists... that is my conclusion...

I agree, it's hard to differentiate between each genre, so I usually lump everything into the "Rock" catagory. I actually prefer my rock to hip hop. Some of my favourite groups are Disturbed, Sevendust, Incubus, Alter Bridge, Audioslave and Killswitch Engage. Lately, I've been listening to some Symphony X, The Butterfly Effect and Green Day, the Bullet In A Bible dvd is awesome :D
