Default Texas school district to let teachers carry guns - 17-08-2008, 06:16 AM

Quote:
Fri Aug 15, 3:32 PM ET

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

This is great news. While it isn't a big deal for this one school, I think that this is going to open up the option for schools across the country. Everyone has the right to protect themselves at home and at work, and teachers should be no exception.

I'm sure that there will be some protests by anti-gun lobbying groups but I say fuck 'em. It's a step in the right direction for this country.

Now, as far as having resource officers at schools, there are certain things that teachers aren't qualified to deal with (drugs, fights, et cetera). They are also there for protection but it's primarily to deal with the issues that teachers and school administration can't deal with.

i'm against this all the way.
if there should be ANYONE with guns besides the officers patrolling the school, it should be the AP (Assistant Principals) cuz

1.they know the school inside and out
2.they know how to deal with misbehaviors since they always have to deal with the bad kids
3.they have more self control

i've seen many teachers actually get into fights with students..no AP's

over here (my school district at least) there are 4 AP's, 1 for each grade level, and when a student gets a referral or something serious, they deal with the kid. i dont even know what a dean is lmao..im guessing u mean principal. u never meet the principal here unless u did some real stupid shit..the principal is never around anyways, always off to meetings and shit

this is a small school in a small city... i do't even know where the fcuk this city is and i live in texas.

texas already has a concealed gun law... so if the teachers have a concealed gun law license then they can bring their guns to school.
