Default Rapidshare Gets Hit Hard - 03-10-2008, 10:27 PM

Quote:
The long awaited court ruling has arrived and it may be very bad news for the
ever-present content hosting website Rapidshare. A court ruled recently in
Germany that the website must not only take down content based on a legal
claim, but proactively take down copyrighted content on it's own.

It was only yesterday that the subject of file-hosting came up in a discussion
about link sharing. A report from P2P-Blog pointed to a German court ruling
(German) that said that not only does the file-hosting service has to comply
with copyright complaints, but also check every file for copyright
infringement. Rapidshare's argument that it is already fighting
copyright infringement appears to have not worked. From P2P-Blog:

The company also has to "proactively check content before publishing
it" if there have been similar infringements in the past. Rapidshare has
to log and check IP numbers of potential infringers as well, according to
the court decision.

Rapidshare has been using a MD5 Hash filter to prevent the upload of
previously removed material, and it told the court that it it has six
employees working full time to remove infringing content. The Hamburg
court however ruled that this was not sufficient because infringers would
only have to change a few bytes of a file in order to circumvent the filter.

Th court also ruled that Rapidshare cannot argue that it is impossible
to stay in business if it would have to check every single file. "A business
model that doesn't use common methods of prevention cannot claim the
protection of the law", the decision reads.

Just thought I would let you all know about this since many people here use RS for "curious" purposes.

i hate rapidshare.

and now that they must log ppl's ip, i won't be uploadin' anymore singles on there.

everybody better start addin' passwords to their rar files. fuck bein' sued.

i prefer megaupload anyways so all that i can say is...

lolololol. fuck rapidshare and their 25gb weekly download limit. i just renewed my megaupload premium and i must have averaged 25gb a day while i was dl'in anime and burnin' them to dvd-r.

What's worse is that Germany and the US are fuck buddies when it comes to laws and shit, especially technology laws.

And for those people adding passwords, make sure you use a password that can't be cracked in a reasonable amount of time. Use upper-case, lower-case, numbers, and characters (such as the $ sign) in your password. I'd also suggest making it at least 8-12 characters long. Only a dedicated fucker would decode some shit like that.

Additionally, name your file something inconspicuous. If you have an .avi of a new movie, call it "big floppy penises" or some shit. No one's going to crack a huge file called "big floppy penises". At least I wouldn't.

This was only to be expected, similar things will probably be said to the other popular file hosting sites.

Justin's suggestions are good about how to name your file, and recomended password strings.

@djloekee27: IP's have always been logged by any website you visit, your ISP also logs every page you visit, and files you download.

I wouldn't call it big floppy penises but I make a pretty big habit out of naming all my uploaded files shit like "Physics 101 Term Essay pt. 1" and shit, then passwording it.
