bass and kicks play in the same frequency range in a sense, you just have to fit them both in there, rather its by gating the bass when the kick hits and/or eqing your kick to where it fits well with the bass your using. Its no secrets, you just gotta learn to mix.

    1. Use Good Kicks.

Alot of kits are ass or sampled from mp3s.

So look out for things like Sonic Specialists, Gold Baby, Even Big Fish Audio.

And Manipulate those sounds to the style of music you're making.

    2. EQ + Compression

Just knowing the right range of the sound can make a BIG difference. IF your 807s boom in 30hz and your kicks hit around 64hz....then it would be wise to filter out other sounds that are ALSO sitting in that region, so the Kick can shine.

I beleive those dudes just hi pass the shit out of their instruments...so the kicks and bass only exist in the range creating the illusion that the kick is alot more special than it is.

The drumma boy kit on my website radiofriendlybeats.com is what i use for most of my 808s and some old modern beats joints.

    3. Tuning

Kicks and snares also have a "key"...you can use AUto Tune and things like that to find its dominate range...and than pitch it to the proper key of the song or bass you are dealing with.

One of two ways to get ANY good sounds (not just 808s), either use high quality samples that someone else has already spent time tweaking, or use whatever samples you want (to an extent) and tweak them yourself to get the sound your looking for.

Not everyone has the skill or patience for the latter of the two...
