    Default Dj'ing And Music theory

    Hello Everyone !

i was always wondering if it's so important for a DJ to have some lessons in the Music theory?
Actually me, when i had just started mixing, i hadn't known a lot about the music theory ( except BPM, pitch and a liiiiiittle bit about key, you know, all the important stuff that you should know when you mix). Later, i've started to learn the music theory, -not in a school but just with a book-, And i've actually found that Dj'ing has a big relation with the music theory,-counter to what the most of djs say-, and that the music theory helps you a lot to improve your remix/mash/up !

And you, what do you thing about the relation between Djing and music theory? is the music theory for you an important thing to learn with The djing or maybe just some notion can suffice to mix well?

    [MOVED THREAD TO MUSICIAN'S LOUNGE]

I believe basic music theory isn't entirely needed for BASIC DJ'ing. However, knowing music theory and being able to distinguish different key signatures just by ear will make you so much better. Knowing music theory will allow you to mix harmonically and make your mixes sound much smoother. Although with the invention of DJ software, we now can have the software analyze our music and tell us what key it is to help us mix harmonically.

So these days, for DJs who are mixing purely on DJ Software, its not as important to learn music theory, but I will always say it never hurts to learn it.
