Default Alchohol & Drugs In Your Networking... - 14-05-2009, 02:38 AM

Made some new contacts today. As soon as I get there theyre offering me dranks and bud. I happily oblijed (sp) them.

So far, pretty much all of the contacts Ive made have been simular to that.

Im wondering what type of hospitality youve run into when networking. Is this common place??

This pretty much applies to anyone...DJs, Producers, Artists, ect.

What kind of situations have you run into when meeting a new networking partner?

Peace, J

Thats normal. It can be hospitality, but still some ppl like to talk business when your not sober so you can say what they want to hear. A lot of ppl don't listen and just go along with shit not paying attention. I never felt for any of that stuff. They always say I know such and such, I can get you here and all that, of course I would be thinking so why your not where you trying to get already then?

Also you got the ppl that want you to smoke all their bud and drink all their liquor so you feel like you owe them something when it was a free offer lol. I don't think I ever been to a studio or just met up with any music contacts where drinking and smoking didn't exist. Its not always like that. Some just like to have a good time and loosen up but still watch yourself and if it feels like bullshit it probably is.

I would say that it's a icebreaker. If thats your thang (smokin n drinkin) then i personally dont see any thing wrong with it. Im new to the beat making world (8 months) and everyone I've met in this business either drinks, smokes, or both.

I like to stay all business until I get to know someone. So no drinking (and I don't smoke)

Agreed, except I don't drink either. In a situation where you're discussing financial matters or the possibilities of such, in my opinion, it's best to always be completely in control. Also, from my point-of-view, it makes you look as if you'd rather be getting fucked up than getting caked up, in which case I've turned down many job offers and business opportunities.

Man I used to drink heavily, and of course but I gave up on alcohol now when I realized how detrimental it is to my body, so I just smoke. I do all of my business if I'm hitting the bong or not. I am capable of handling decisions on it. It's cool for some, and others can't do it. It's all personal opinion. Everytime I'm at a studio session you can guarantee that the dutch will be lite, and good music will be made!!

Getting fucked up WHILE making money...nothing better.

Never mix business with pleasure. I never smoke or drink with a potential business partner or new connection. Obviously if you've known the dude for a long while then its ok but when I first started I made the mistake and some promises were made that were not kept and ever since then I dont mix those two together. Keep business, business.

Now if an agreement is already met, or contract is made and yall are in the studio making music then its cool. But NEVER make business agreements drunk, high or both.

This is, at its core, a rather inconsequential and personal issue. If you are a regular marijuana smoker or drinker, then it is not crazy to do that while networking. The main thing to keep in mind is that you, as a rule, don't want to get retarded where you don't know what's going on. Keep it social, keep it light. If you know that one puff off of a joint is going to make it where can't think clearly, don't do it.

If I were about to go do something, sign something that's going to change my day to day life, I'd probably go sober. But that's just me. It all depends on who you are and who you're going to be meeting with. Getting together with a friend on a little money-making project is different than a suit holding a 10-page contract.
