if you're using Photoshop you could try the Extract feature, you need to be patient tho and have a steady hand ;)... this is just something I done quickly so it's not the best:
1. Open you image.
2. Click 'Filter -> Extract'. (http://xs312.xs.to/xs312/07081/extract1-cp.PNG)
3. Draw an outline round your person, using the pen tool, top left, change the brush size as you wish at the right side. (http://xs312.xs.to/xs312/07081/extract2-cp.PNG)
4. Click the paint tin and click inside the area you want to extract. (http://xs312.xs.to/xs312/07081/extract3-cp.PNG)
5. Click 'Ok', top right. (http://xs312.xs.to/xs312/07081/extract4-cp.PNG)
6. The finished image. (http://xs312.xs.to/xs312/07081/extract5-cp.PNG)
As I said I just quickly done that, you can get better results by taking your time.

I use the extract tool or the lasso to take away big areas first then clean up the rough edges with the eraser at low opacity. If you use Paintshop you can use the background eraser tool too.

cut out the image with the lasso tool. knock out the biggest bits around the edges. Zoom in, change to a smaller brush and knock out as much as possible. Then go to layers/blending options. use an outer glow with whatever color( I prefer white). This will give you a pretty much smooth outline all the way around the cutout. experiment with different spreads and opacities.

yeah with photoshop, i usually use the magic eraser followed with the eraser in the smallest size and then smudge or blur the edges so they don't look so rough
i never knew how to do the extract before, so i'm gonna have to try that out. thanks for the tips

Also lets say u have an object and the background is a solid color like white. U can take the wand and click on the white and hit delete and boom all the white is gone quickly.
