haha.. as usual i got here a bit late... anyways, i haven't done this in a while now, but incase you hadn't figured it out yet here's what worked for me
i use the following to do this:
quicktime pro
giffy
unfreeze
microsoft office picture manager
first get a pro version of the quicktime software. open your avi with it, then click file>export. under the settings that come up, choose avi to image sequence, and select bmp 25fps [25 frames per second]. if you click options you can reduce the fps so you won't have too many pictures to go through. about 5 fps should be good. you should get more than enough so that you can discard some later. if you want your avatar in slow motion just jack up the fps to a higher number. note: this process will take along time and use alot of space at higher framerates like 25fps
the next thing i do is crop and size all the pics. i use microsoft office picture manager [it came with either office xp or office 2000, the newest office that i got didn't have it and i just poped in the old disc and installed just that app] this program will let you select all the pics and crop them all together, you know?, so all the pics match up properly. you can also adjust the color, contrast and brightness etc in this app. oh the avatar here is 150 x 150 btw.
next we need to convert the bmp's to gif's. any photo app can do this. i started off using paint. it takes a while cause you gotta do them all individually. so i found an app called giffy. this one is done individually too, except that it's done via right clicking the file, so it's a bit faster. it can also make a part of your clip transparent.
no onto unfreez.. open unfreez drag and drop your gifs and click make animated gif. that's it. check out your finished work, if it's too slow, just redo this last step with some gifs removed at equal intervals.
example if i have 30 gifs, and it's looks too slow, remove something like every 5th one... so i''d discard all the gifs ending in a 1 or a 6. that should preserve the flow of the vid. i usually pick mine by looking at the clips to see which ones look the best
anyways, the giffy and unfreez are freewares i think so they shouldn't be to hard to find, but if your having trouble getting any of these apps, let me know and i'll up em for you

I like to use VID2GIF to capture the frames. I save the .gif file. Then I use Adobe ImageReady to open the .gif. Then there's a button at the bottom of the left panel to swich it over to Photoshop. Then u edit in Photoshop how u like then click that buttton at the bottom again to transfer it back to ImageReady. Then u can Save Optimized As to a .gif. Basically u end up with an animated GIF.
