I have noticed something shocking lately. There are no true coffeehouses around here! There's StarButts. That's it. That means there are no:
Open mic nights
Poetry slams
VOICE FOR THE YOUTH!
The theatres around here are run down and poorly attended. They barely stay alive through donations.
YOU CAN CHANGE THIS!
You'll need help from a few like-minded friends, but you can change this.
Have an impromptu urban poetry night in the park. Advertise it through word of mouth and fliers. Lots and lots of fliers. Express your reality! Urban poetry slam at (location). Show up at (time, date). If you live near a major city, try to get a somewhat popular person to show up. If you plan it FAR in advance and can pay a few hundred dollars for transport and hotel, you'd probably be able to get Erykah Badu or another famous, well-meaning poet to show up to help. You'd be surprised at how tight-knit the urban arts community is.
Do some spoken word on a street corner or in a park.
Play(meaning perform) some music in a similar area.
Beatbox.
Write and perform some political raps.
Another bonus is that you can make some cash doing this, but consider that a side bonus and nothing more. You're spreading the arts, not working!
Do some street theatre. I have personal experience with this. A favorite routine of mine has been and always will be the hippies. Me and Shana would go in front of Wal-Fart in tye-dye shirts. It helps that I have long hair and share a lot of hippie ideals. I find that since I have hippie sentiments, it's easy to make fun of it. We'd take turns singing Bob Dylan or Janis Joplin songs. We'd tell this story about how we need money to buy a bunch of LSD, go with 5000 friends to the Pentagon, sit around it and meditate until it starts floating in the air, all the bad spirits come out from under it, and the War in Iraq ends. And, boy, did we get money. We got a ton of money for this. Actually, this started a trend of street theatre around here last summer and I plan to do it again this year. Most of all, we loved doing it. We both love acting and those were some of the best days of the summer.
So get out, spread the word, and have fun doing it!
