First MP3 Player

Was looking around on eBay for a few Christmas items and I found this:

Rio PMP300 32 MB MP3 Player (1121738) NEW - (eBay item 200182789569 end time Dec-16-07 16:43:27 PST)

I read up on it and it was the second commercially released MP3 player ever. With a whopping 32 megs of space, you could store an incredible half hour of music on this bad boy.

I was thinking about buying it until I read about the flaws in it (and yes, I was actually going to use this thing). It takes SD Flash, so you can change out the memory in it.

All I have to say is that it is nice to see how far we have progressed in the past ten years.

Yea, it's a good ol' parallel port. USB had not yet caught on (USB was made in 1996) when this sucker was made and people still loved using those big ports.

With a SD card upgrade, you could get up to 8 gigs on this sucker.

Retail price on this baby was $200 and for an additional $50 you could get an improved version with an incredible 64 megs of space. I will say that this one looks better than the first commercial portable MP3 player:

if you convert you files to 96kb you could get like an hour

It wasn't long ago when PCs only had 32MB HDDs in them.............LOL

I know, I still have an old PC with two 500 MB hard drives that does its very best to play Duke Nukem 3D and Warcraft.

My first 'puter was a Commodore 64. No hard drive, just an external floppy drive and tape drive ... yeah, tape, as in cassette tape ... the 'computer' was a glorified keyboard with all the fixin's inside the keyboard case. You plugged in your choice of disk or casette drive to the keyboard then plugged that into your television.

A month after I bought the 'puter, I splurged on a 10 meg (yes, I said 'meg') hard drive. It was about the same size as a small tower is today ... roughly a foot and a half tall, a foot and a half deep and about 8 inches wide.

Okay, so I'm old ... but it's been cool as hell watching technology fly and being able to compare what we have now to what we had then.

Oh, and my first mp3 player was similar to that one ... a Rio 64 meg sport.
