(10/15/07) STAMFORD - The Stamford man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend over the weekend in an intoxicated, jealous rage faced a judge Monday.

Twenty-year-old Juan Botello was arraigned for the murder of 21-year-old Layla Banks, of Greenwich. Police say he also faces a larceny charge for stealing a car in an attempt to get away from the scene of the crime.

According to police, Botello stabbed Banks in a hallway of the Stamford Sheraton early Saturday morning. They say the two broke up a week ago, and that they separately attended an all-night party in a room at the hotel.

Less than 24 hours after Botello allegedly killed Banks, police say he turned himself in and gave an eight-page confession.

Botello's lawyer requested his client undergo detox for alcohol abuse. He also asked for Botello to be placed on suicide watch while awaiting trial.

Police say Botello was arrested for stabbing a man in 2005. The victim in that case did not die and police say Botello served nine months for that crime.

Bail was set Monday at more than $2 million. Botello is scheduled back in court October 22.
