Society's Soul, thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Tell us a bit about yourself, your name, where you’re from and an interesting fact if you like...
Hi there. My name is Mario. I'm from New York and I'm the founder, vocalist and songwriter of Society's Soul. The SS debut album "Soulscream" is a 24 track concept album and it was released on March 25!
Listen to Society's Soul song "Flicker Of My Soul" here...
Is there a story behind your name Society's Soul?
I wanted a name that represented what the band is about. Something that you can get from just hearing the name. I think when you hear the name Society's Soul, you get an image in your head of a band that is approaching heavier topics than the average band. And that's what you'll find - topics such as injustice, inequality, grieving over the loss of a loved one, destruction of the environment, what companies will do for greed and more.
How long have you been a band?
Actually, Society's Soul is just me right now but auditions are underway for a touring band (and hopefully long-term members).
What/who inspires your music?
I love all music and my music definitely is inspired by rock, christian rock and CCM. The bands that really inspire a lot of SS' music are Switchfoot, Lifehouse, Creed, Goo Goo Dolls, Daughtry and U2.
Do you see being in a band as a career, or as a hobby?
Definitely not a hobby. I and my record company have big plans for SS in 2014 and beyond.
What are you trying to do with your music? Do you want to help your community? Are you trying to get rich? What is your goal for your music?
The debut album is a 24 track concept album with a redemptive story. It's about someone who has lost faith in this world, in love, in God. This person hears their soul screaming but doesn’t know what to do about it. They want to make sense of what they see, what they feel. This is why the album is called "Soulscream". The album covers all these different moods in it and also spoken words that have their own story that can standalone from the songs. As the album progresses, the listener will be taken on a journey that they may find familiar in their own life and through the songs they may find their own truth. That is my hope. Although the songs have a non-secular faith based view, they can also be listened to and understood from a secular point of view. The songs contain things we all go through and struggle to understand.
I have always done a lot of environmental/humanitarian work but now through SS I want to get involved in doing a lot more humanitarian charity work.
My music goal is to bring something that is needed nowadays, music that inspires and speaks to your soul.
Have you ever performed live? How did it feel?
Yes, with my former bands and doing solo work. It feels great to perform for people and I'm looking forward to doing so with SS!
What one tip would you give to other aspiring independent artists?
Work hard at your craft, promote yourself as much as possible and above all, believe in yourself.
What do you see is in the future for the music industry? How do you think it will evolve/change?
I think the biggest change in recent years has been digital and social media and that will continue to evolve into something more personal for the fans.
Do you feel like the internet is helping you as an independent artist?
Yes, it helps fans to learn about SS, hear the music and to get to understand who SS is. It also gives them an easy way to connect with SS and myself.
How do you think social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have affected the music industry?
They have made artists much more accessible than they ever were. Before the only way you could reach out to an artist was by joining a fan club or trying to meet them before or after a show (usually by winning a radio show contest). Now, you have more ways to interact with them and try to get a reply, etc. Plus social media allows artists to reach out to their fanbase with news on an immediate basis. This allows for a great connection with the fans.
Where can we hear your music online?
You can hear some full songs on
and you can preview and buy/download the whole album on
You can also hear SS on XBox Music, Amazon MP3, Rhapsody and most other digital music sites
What projects are you working on at the moment?
Doing auditions to get the touring band ready!
Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?
Still putting out new music and having become a positive force in the music industry.
Do you have any shoutouts you want to give?
I would like to thank you for this interview and opportunity to introduce people to SS. I also want to thank everyone for reading this. Our fans are called soulscreamers and if your soul is screaming for something, I hope you find it with SS and become a fellow soulscreamer with me.
Thanks again Society's Soul for doing this interview.
I THANK YOU!
