• Interview with DownTown Mystic (Musician/Songwriter)

DownTown Mystic is the alter ego of American Rocker, Robert Allen. He recently put out the digital release of his album ďRockíníRoll RomanticĒ.

Thanks for taking the time to do this interview DownTown Mystic.

    MUSIC
Is there a story behind your name?
Yes, there is. The simple one is DOWNTOWN is usually where the clubs are rockin'.

MYSTIC is creativity. Put them together and you get a VIBE.

How long have you been a musician/songwriter?
    Too Long.

What first got you interested in playing music and writing songs?
    The Beatles

    What/who inspires your music?
    Everything.

What are you trying to do with your music? Are you trying to get rich? What is your goal for your music?
Get rich? LOL My goal: RockíníRoll

Do you have any kind of management, publishing or distribution team behind you? If so what are their responsibilities?
    Yes. Digital Distribution: The Orchard

What are some accomplishments that you have achieved, and are most proud of?
When I started out I wanted to hear my music on the radio. That was a really big deal and it was really hard to do.

But as I got older I focused more on trying to write great songs and play with great musicians.

Iíve had my music played on over 10,000 radio stations around the world.

My music has been used on over 100 TV shows and I had a #1 single in Europe earlier this year.

Iím one of only 3 artists that have had Bruce Springsteenís rhythm section play with them.

But I personally get great satisfaction when somebody sends me an email and tells me how much one of my songs means to them.

Thatís when I feel like I really accomplished something.

Why are you trying to bring back the Rock Album as an art form?
I think that with the digital age things have become fragmented. Everything seems to be geared towards instant gratification.

Attention spans are shorter and people can pick and choose among tracks to listen to, especially with streaming.

Part of this is on the artists and record companies just pushing one track because thatís all theyíve got to push.

Thatís why all the chatter about ďthe album is deadĒ has been popping up for a while now.

As an artist I want to create something that can hold the listenerís attention and hopefully give them an experience that can have some meaning for them.

Thatís what the great rock albums did.

What's it like playing with Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame members Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent from the E Street Band of your new album "Rock'n'Roll Romantic"?
It was a terrific experience. They have this intuitional thing when they play. Like just a look or nod and they know what to do.

All I had to do was just play my guitar. They really make it easy.

What one tip would you give to other musicians?
    Believe in what you do.

What do you see is in the future for the music industry? How do you think it will evolve/change?
Not really sure. Streaming seems to be the big thing thatís going to eliminate download and physical sales, but Iím not so sure about that.

The record companies will take the easiest way out, so Streaming will be their thing to make easy money.

But there is whole new crop of artists and musicians who might see it differently.

    INTERNET
Do you feel like the internet is helping you as a musician/songwriter?
Yes, the internet has definitely been a tremendous game changer for better or worse.

But I think overall it has given musician/songwriters tools to greatly help them improve.

I know itís been a great help to my career.

How do you think social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have affected the music industry?
I think Social Media has been one of the great tools for musicians/artists to build a fan base and make a connection.

Itís certainly been a boon to the music industry to help publicize their artists and products.

Where can we hear your music online?

    IN CLOSING
What projects are you working on at the moment?
Iíve just put out the digital release of ďRockíníRoll RomanticĒ and Iím putting the CD release together for a release this fall.

It will be slightly different from the digital release.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?
    Thatís a good one.

Do you have any shoutouts you want to give?
I would like to give a shoutout to all of the musicians and people who have helped me throughout the years.

I wouldn't be here without them.

Thanks again DownTown Mystic for doing this interview.
