• Interview with Andy Vargas (Singer)

Andy Vargas is the lead singer of Carlos Santana's band and has recently released his own single, "The Beat". He's currently working on the music videos for the single, and also preparing to release his second single.

How long have you been singing?
Hello, I have been singing since the age of 7.

What first got you interested in becoming a singer?
My father Javier Vargas is a vocalist so I grew up watching him sing to his audiences and to me personally some time.

    What/who inspires your music?
I am inspired by love, passion, excitement for life as well as the down times. Understanding fears and overcoming them.

Do you see being a singer as a career, or as a hobby?
No. Being a singer is who I am.

What are you trying to do with your music? Do you want to help your community? Are you trying to get rich? What is your goal for your music?
There is so much negativity and violence sold and projected in the press and media. People are hurting and are in fear. Worried about the future. I want my music to be the opposite of that. We have to remind people to love each other. I want to inspire and remind people to be confident in themselves and enjoy life through music and positive words. Music is my way to have a voice and to reach the world. I only want to sustain myself financial to be able to do this. It all is a blessing.

How does it feel when you perform live?
I feel most comfortable when I am on stage performing. I enjoy the rush before and the interaction with the audience.

Do you have any kind of management, publishing or distribution team behind you? If so what are their responsibilities?
I do have a management team and public relation team behind me. Their roles are to organize my career plans, find new opportunities and help execute them.

What are some accomplishments that you have achieved, and are most proud of?
I have been able to be a key note speaker at high school graduations. I have always watched others do this as a child and wondered if that could ever be me and If I could do anything important in life to be asked. Also I was voted in the hall of fame at my high school, Watsonville high. This was one of my proudest moments.

Have you ever made any contact with major artists or other high positioned people in the music industry and do you keep in contact with them?
I have been blessed to work with one of the guitar legends of our life time Carlos Santana. I see him periodically thought the year as we work together and tour.

I have also met many major artists in my career. Everyone is so busy so I mostly bump into artists or groups on the road.

What one tip would you give to other independent artists?
Never, never, never give up and to always trust and listen to the voice inside before anyone else.

What do you see is in the future for the music industry? How do you think it will evolve/change?
As music becomes easier to create and share we must remind ourselves that the content we create effects the world. Artists will have to get more and more creative to find ways of creating income and keeping costs low. Technology has driven the music market. Music always come back to the song, the vocalist, the performance and the way it makes you feel. No matter the new production tricks, bells and whistles it's all about emotion of the song.

Do you feel like the internet is helping you as an independent artist?
I do think the internet had helped me and other independent artists but just as well the music market has become over saturated with just anyone posting anything. Sometimes I get lost from listening to an amazing artist to watching some pointless content.

How do you think social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have affected the music industry?
Facebook and Twitter have affected the music industry completely. Everyone has an identity and has a voice. You don't need to be a major signed artist to get noticed anymore.

Are there any music start-ups that you think we should keep an eye on?
Keep a look out for my independent record company "Souleros Records".

Where can we hear your music online?
You can hear my new single "The Beat" on iTunes, Spotify and all digital distributions.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I just released my first single "The Beat" in both English and Spanish. I also had it remix by House Music legend Richard Vission. That will be released in a few weeks. It's a dope house banger.

We are gearing up for the music videos and preparing for single number two.

Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?
I hope to have my music known throughout the world by sales and touring as well continuing to working with Carlos Santana. I want to live my life making music, keeping it positive, making people dance and changing lives.

Do you have any shoutouts you want to give?
I want to shout out to our youth. To remind them that nothing is impossible and they hold the future in their hands. Do something good with it.

I look forward to talking with you all again,
    Andy Vargas.

Thanks again Andy Vargas for doing this interview.
