What is Off Page SEO?
Off Page SEO is the process of doing things away from your own beat website pages to increase the rank of your website in search engines. Primarily it comes down to getting links to your website.
Off Page SEO / Getting Links
As mentioned in our SEO Basics article, words in links are an important factor in SEO, this we can control with our link building.
Here’s a few ways to get links to your website, this list is not exhaustive.
Comment on Blogs
Go to Google blog search and find blogs posting about beats, producing, selling beats. anything related to your website, subscribe to them then comment on them. Your comment should be real not spam.
In the Name field put one of the keywords you want your website to rank for, and in the Website field put a link to your website or one of the pages.
It would probably be a good idea to set up alerts using Google Alerts, so you don’t have to search yourself every day. Google Alerts will send you an email with links to blogs that have recently posted something relating to the keywords you want to be alerted about.
Writing a creative news story will get you thousands of links back to your site, if the story is picked up on popular social sites such as Digg, Sphinn, StumbleUpon, and Mixx.
Your story should be believable and well written or it won’t get picked up. If the story is found to be false search engines will penalize the page and remove any “benefits” you got by publishing the story.
The only other suggestion is the title of the story should contain a keyword you want to rank for.
Here’s an example of a creative story: 13 Year Old Steals Dad's Credit Card to Buy Hookers
This story was picked up everywhere and was even broadcasted on Fox News.
Take a look at a Google search, and it shows over 150,000 results.
The keyword they wanted to rank for was “credit card”, and they did. However, when the story was found to be false their ranking was removed.
So this technique is sort of black hat, use it or not as you wish.
Find related blogs and ask if you can write an article for them to post on their blog with a link back to your site.
Give Away Free Stuff
Have a page with unique free beats, drumkits, vsts or anything you can think of, as long as it is on one page where people can link to.
Submit your site to website directories. There are lots of directories out there, and people do offer directory submission services where they will submit your site to directories for you. The main directory you’ll want listed in is DMOZ.
You can find a list of other directories you should submit to here: http://www.seocompany.ca/directory/t...rectories.html
I mentioned some sites in the Creative News section, but it doesn’t have to be creative news you submit. You can submit anything you like.
You can find a list of sites on Wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...al_bookmarking
Ask webmasters of related websites if they would exchange links with you.
Tips for Exchanging Links
- Do not exchange links with non related websites!
- Don’t get a sitewide link - a link that is on all pages, instead try and get a homepage link.
- Make sure the site is high quality and one you want to be associated with, if the website already has a lot of links on the page move on to the next one.
Link exchanges are against Google webmaster guidelines so only exchange links with a few sites or you may get caught.
This is against Google’s webmaster guidelines also, so do or do not as you wish.
Look for related websites which sell links, contact them and purchase. Simple.
Black Hat Techniques
Never do any sort of black hat techniques if you plan on running a long term business. Doing so will get your website punished by, or banned from the search engines. Find some black hat SEO techniques below with descriptions.
As search engines use the number of links pointing at your website to determine how well it should rank you, they frown strongly upon buying links.
Keyword stuffing is having the same word repeated hundreds of times on the page. You are allowed to have your words repeated but do not over do it! Try to stick to three to four times and use similar words and phrases instead of the word that you want to repeat.
Hiding Links and Keywords
Hiding links and keywords is having links/keywords the same color as your page background or having code in the source which doesn’t show to users, ie. Html comments, hidden divs.
Link injection is basically putting your links on other websites without permission; I won’t go into any examples.
There are countless other techniques, if you think something you are trying is black hat drop a comment below and I’ll get back to you.
