Default What You Need To Start Your Own Home Studio (for beginners) - 06-07-2008, 01:37 PM

This is a basic guide on what you will need to start your own home studio. this is for artists who do not have a lot of money to spend but would rather record themselves instead of paying for studio time. most of this equipment can be found at a reasonable price. you can find it at GUITAR CENTER & they will give you a discount if you buy it all at once.
Guitars, Musical Instruments, and Musical Equipment from Guitar Center

1st - you will need a computer. anything with at least a 120GB HARD-DRIVE & 2GB of RAM (memory). this will let you record with out having multiple drop outs or negative feed back.

2nd - you will need a condenser mic. these are the best quality mic's to record vocal's on. you want one that use's a MIDI cable.

3rd - you will need a mic stand.

4th - you will need a pop filter. this will protect your mic & give your vocal's better quality when you record.

5th - you will need headphones. studio headphones are the way to go.

6th - you will need studio monitors. these speakers are the proffesional way to go when playing your music back to level out the volume & know when something is peaking.

7th - you will need a pre-amp/audio interface. this is what you use to hook up your mic/speakers/headphones to your computer.

8th - you will need a PCI card. you need to install this into the back of your computer to plug your pre-amp/audio interface in to your computer.

9th - now that you have all of the basic equipment you will now need to get a program to record with. most multi-track recording programs are good but there are some that work like a monopoly & make you buy certain equipment just to use their program. ask your sale's rep about this & which program will work best for your budget.

10th - you will need to get some plug-in's/VST's. these are the effects you will need when mixing your music.

11th - you will need to get some books & tutorials on your new program, music theory, & mixing. yes you will need to read & study to have more control over what you do. this way you will understand what your doing when recording. you can't just walk into a college & get straight A's you need to study.

finally you will need to find a good place to set up your equipment. soundproofing is recommended but if you can't afford it right away it is not necessary. remember starting a home studio is not cheap & most people take a while before they actually are able to have control on their equipment. but if you are dedicated to music enough to work hard & put your all into it you will start making the type of music you like in no time.

remember this music thing don't happen over night!!!
