If u have talent and originality u will gain a following. Find ur own niche and develop ur style to be unique. Its fine as an artist and producer to have people influence u but to wanna be just like them and copy them is no bueno. Yea u may be underground but underground artist can make the music they feel and people will fell a deeper connection with them. Just look at Tech n9ne prime example

I say u make music for yourself and your circle of friends first and if other ppl catch on then that's when u know ur original.the problem is hip hop has turned into a hustle and its not about the art anymore.

Wow so much great posts and thoughts on this one especiallyproducerjc's post!
I think todays music has lost it's profoundity, reason and realness, it's just a overproduced, meaningless product to generate as much money as possible. In any genre.

I agree with DirtyScope on the original beat thing.. i think ppl should also make more songs about more profound things. I'm tired of artists talking about their cash and cars (Rap), how they party every day (Pop) or how they fxck their girl (R&B) lol
Maybe get some inspiration from older songs (60s-80s) it works for my beats too ;)

I hate the new music now a days. I don't listen to anything Beside Eminem, and Slaughter House and maybe a few Jadakiss/styles p tracks, but even they fell a bit off except for Slaughterhouse and Eminem who always find something creative to do that other people didn't. Mainstream Music has died along time ago with this trap Bullcrap, and other wack artist spitting nonsense like Chief Keef and etc. I sometimes wonder how they make it and i still working at it even with unique music...
They need to let underground artist step up they stay on the grind..... red cafe stack bundles r.i.p..........and other i could name.

Some rappers are only famous because they're good at making money.

think about it guys, it's not the rappers/artists that are to blame
the rappers and labels are business men, it's all about the money, what sells best
the time when people made hip hop music out of passion for hip hop are over (atleast the success of passionable hip hop is over)
so all the artists are looking for is money, can you blame them for that? imo u can't
if i'd be able to rap and get a "richful career" by copying other styles and artists, i'd do so aswell

now that i said who is not to blame i gotta tell you who is to blame, the "fans" are to blame, the fact that the "fans" buy and support the same shit over and over again causes the artists to do the same shit over and over again, just what sells best, they can't really be blamed ...

That's true to an extent. Rappers like Nas and Tech are doing their thing and don't really care what anyone has to say.

Look at Notorious BIG's Ready to Die and Life After Death albums.

Ready to Die has the shit, lyrically focused, and simple.
Life after Death incorporated more mainstream beats (mainly because of better equipment and more hype/popularity), but also Biggie's hooks got cheesier.

    Just something to think about.

EDIT: The Notorious movie portrayed biggie as not liking the juicy beat. He got messed up and then rapped to it. Not sure if that's accurate, but shows what some rappers have to deal with when they get big.

It is not all about the money.. its about the talent. If there is no talent there is no money. So there fore riding the coat tails of someone else's talent to get to the money, is just plain wack. Biting has always been a crime in the rap game for this very reason. This is why the originality is needed. Prove that you can get to the money based off your own talents.

well half of the people in the industry smoke which says something. They need to smoke to get inspired which is BS you should be inspired already to make music if you so called love to do it. I haven't seen a video yet of Lex Luger where he not smoking weed or some weird blunt they make. They think it make them cool, and hip and put out dope shit but little do they know they shit be wack not saying all of lex luger beats are wack but some sound the same well most trap are the same you can only do so much with that style. I mean look what happen to Eminem when he was high and shit all his rhymes started getting shitty on that one album but when he stop he got better again, but now he became more serious and well his serious stuff still not as good as his original style.

My whole thing is that people are scared to be original. Most are so caught up listening to all that mainstream dumbs#!t and thinking that's the way to come up. And they have really no desire to create original music they rather mimic whats playing everywhere rather than capitalize on it. Because in reality (at least to me) all that s#!t is easy to say and create. Cats is just basic, that's what got everybody thinkin' they can do it.
