The future is more promising than ever for musicians if you ask me.

I'm not saying that if you stick to only making songs you're gonna become a millionaire... you have to use music as a platform. First off, going independent is the most profitable as far as making music. Everyone is making music nowadays and social media is integrated in a lot of our daily lives... using these tools to promote yourself and gain a buzz is the first step. Once you establish yourself and establish some sort of fan base your foot is in the door. Obviously not everyone has a blossoming career and it's easier said than done, but if you continue to grow then you can transfer your success in music to success elsewhere. It's all about marketing and social networking. Look at 50 Cent... he came up with Dr. Dre and Eminem as the biggest rap artist of that time, now he's not in the limelight as much anymore, but best believe he is still caking. He branched outside of music with vitamin water, clothes and sneakers, movies, etc...
