Default Relevance In today’s Industry (an intro by CESARE BORGIA) - 28-11-2006, 05:39 PM

This is something I'm working on for the new tutorial section once it's up, i want to make a guide for people seeking staying power in today's music industry, i think that's one thing thats always been overlooked, to many times people are put out in the spotlight and marketed as gangsters and thugs without much thought to the future, this is meant for them, its just an intro to the guide that I'm working on, let me know your thoughts about it and if it seems biased.

The first step starts with conception of an idea that you want to turn into a song or poetry, for this tutorial, I’m going to focus on Rap/Hip Hop.

When many people think of Rap music, they think of profanity, women being disrespected and tales of violence, while this is often the case, it's not always the truth, this form of music can be uplifting, sad, political and even at times, bring community's together.

What you do with it has a direct effect on what it does with you, meaning, if you go the route of run of the mill generic lyrics about violence and how much bling you have, your bound to become obscure before you even taste a measure of success. By treating rap like a novelty, you yourself become the novelty, a one hit wonder at best. On the other hand, if you treat rap like an extension of yourself, it can then grow with you and take on it's own unique characteristics, this is how an idea is birthed into a rhyme, this is more important than anything else because it determines the entire outcome of your profession.

Writing a rhyme is like raising a child, by only putting in half the effort, your child/rhyme will never grow to it's fullest potential, everything you put into it determines how it will live and breathe, build everything you write in such a way that it can survive and not perish from the next man, your rhymes are your life and vise versa, put your heart and soul into it.

Step two, i want to start out by saying, you need to be in the moment in order to write a rhyme with any kind of message. The ultimate goal of any lyricist is to invoke the same emotions you feel while your in the “moment”, for example, if your aim is to write a song about being betrayed by a woman you loved, it should be done in a way that others can relate to, they need to feel that betrayal that you felt, that’s why i suggest only picking up the pen and pad when that feeling hits you, use it as a tool or public therapy, confide in your audience as if your writing a letter to that person who betrayed you, let them know how it affected you and what the fallout is, the same is true with any topic bearing substance, the people reading and listening to it are you sympathetic ear, their there so that you can get whatever you need to off of your chest, let them see your heart and don’t hide anything from them, that’s how you create a bond with your audience.

Take my advice and you will no longer be a product that they purchase, you become a human being with insecurities, needs and emotions in their eyes, someone they can now relate to, in turn, they care about your well being and pay attention to you because your now one of them, each person you make that connection with is one more person you can personally reach through your lyrics, someone you can talk directly to, at this point, your fans cease to be consumers, while money is a large factor, your fans should be the biggest.

In this day and age your fans matter more than ever before, if their to spend money on you, it has to be worth it, why should they pay for your music if you didn’t put your best effort into it?, they have a RIGHT to download it for free if it’s anything less than your best, that’s why everything I’m writing is so important, think of payment as a thank you instead of a right, if you paid somebody to do a job for you and they did a bad job, would you hire them again?, be true to your audience and they will be true to you.

The third step is image, the secret to this is, DON'T CREATE AN IMAGE, be the person you are already, and when i say that, i mean look inside your soul and let people see the real you, the person you are when you think nobody’s watching, not the person you’d like to be.

To accomplish this step is a major hurdle for most people because not even they truly know themselves, you must shed your doubts and insecurities, i don’t mean that you can’t have insecurities, what i mean is, show your insecurities, put them out for all to see, don’t be ashamed of your emotions, if your happy, let them see you smile, if your angry, let them see your anger and if your sad, show them your tears.

Now that your free to be yourself, anybody can relate to you, their able to look at your trials and accomplishments as if it’s theirs as well, they now have a legitimate interest in you as an individual, your on their level and in their reach, not larger than life and out of touch. This is the mistake that 99% of people make, they assume their audience wants an action figure with no worries or cares other than money, fast cars and bitches, they make a record without any reason except money and their moment of fame, this on the other hand is the blueprints to becoming RELEVENT, you can’t put a price on that, ever.

artists like Eminem (if he gets back on his game), Nas, 2pac, The Game,
Jay-z (to a degree), people who ain't just in it for the cash and fame because that shit don't last, how can you be relevant when your carrier is based on talking about how much money and jewelry you have? that's why Cash Money records faded out, it got old, plain and simple, unless there's a real REASON your in the game, in my eyes your not relevant.
