i have a 500gb internal hard drive right now. for music production, is this fine (i have a 30gb partition and a 470gb partition) or would i be better off gettin' a 60gb or 80gb hard drive just for windows and programs (i'm not sure if the large hard drive slows down the pc or not)?

larger hard drives don't generally slow down the pc, I would just stick with the setup u've got now... or if you get a couple of Hard drives and are worried about speed, you could RAID them at RAID 0... | |

With big HD's -the only thing that Ive heard about is that sometimes Windows dosen't "see" the whole drive, so people say just get two smaller ones to avoid the problems-I don't have any experience with this though its just Hearsay to me.

No I was talkin bout hard drive, I have seen people talking bout having problems with windows not being capable of seeing the whole drive when the drive was bigger than 200gb or some shit. I read it in a few different places, when I was researching building a production pc. People were saying that they had installed 250gb(or bigger) hardrives and windows only detected/let them write to 200gb or a bit less. They said the solution was to install a really good drive between 30-60 gb just for samples and shit, and then to install between one 60 and 200gb for your main drive. Like I said I don't have personal experience with this, all I can tell you is what I read.

i have powerquest's partition magic so i can always use that to format any hard drive space windows doesn't see. i think windows only formats up to 250gb's for some reason, i used partition magic to get the rest of my hard drive up (or i may have typed things in wrong when i installed windows).

maybe FAT systems never saw >250Gb, but FAT systems stopped before Windows NT... since NT it's been NTFS systems... although u can format ur drives as FAT/FAT32 if u want... Quote:

With audio you always want 2. Your DAW will be constantly writing your recordings direct to disk, this is excessive strain on the hard drive.

*Nodding at CP*
I have 1T and 500G in my Dell and every single block is viewed by my os (WinXP Pro). I also have a 1T USB drive that I back up to every other day or so. Yeah, I'm a little gun-shy after losing a term paper years ago whilst' attending college ... set me back an entire term.

I like running 2 HDDs myself cuz I have a smaller drive set up as master with Windows and all my main progs on it then I setup a bigger HDD as the slave drive that I store my MP3z, vidz, etc.
